VU Bowling opens season with second place finish at Dirty Bird Classic

JACKSON, Mich. – The Vincennes University Bowling team had a great start to their 2024-25 season this past Saturday at the annual Dirty Bird Classic hosted by Concordia University in Michigan.

The Trailblazers took second place as a team in the tournament, posting a team score of 2803 in three traditional games and a total of 1899 pins in 10 Baker games.

Vincennes was led by sophomore Dakota Waskom (Louisville, Ky.) who got the season started with a bang, posting the best game score of the tournament with a 247 in his first game.

Waskom continued to climb up the leaderboard with a 201 in his second game before closing the traditional games with a 198, giving him a total of 646 pins and a third place finish overall.

Freshman Colton Martin (Breese, Ill.) had a strong start to his season in his collegiate debut, starting with a 167 and 192 in the first two games before closing out with 239 to climb to a 10th place finish.

Senior Brighton Lucas (Salem, Ill.) was the third VU bowler to finish in the Top 15, posting a game of 246 in between a 166 in game one and 165 in game three for a total of 577.

Sophomore Nick Gregg (Salem, Ill.) was the fourth Trailblazer to bowl all three traditional games, finishing with a 148 in game one, 177 in game two and 122 in game three to finish 66th overall.

Freshmen Carter Martin (Breese, Ill.), Ryan Webber (Evansville, Ind.) and sophomore Dylan Lewis (Louisville, Ky.) combined to pick up the fifth game for the Trailblazers.

Martin took game one with a 139, Webber bowled game two with a score 169 before handing it over to Lewis who closed out with a 227 in game three.

The Trailblazers posted a team score of 2,803 pins in the three traditional games.

VU then turned over to the 10 baker games, split into two flights of five, closing out the first flight strong with a 246 and 245 in games four and five.

Vincennes closed out the weekend strong in the second flight of baker games, posting a team total of 1,899 pins in the 10 games, giving them a tournament total of 4,702 pins, good for second place as a team.

The Blazers will look to keep this hot start to their season going in their next tournament when VU heads to Wauwatosa, Wis. Saturday, Oct. 5 and Sunday, Oct. 6 for the 2024 Midwest Collegiate Championships.
